Follow dates

How to see when someone followed you on X (Twitter), and for how long

X (Twitter) doesn't show when someone followed you, or for how long. You can still narrow it to a range, because every profile says when the account joined X and your followers list starts with your most recent followers, though X doesn't promise that order.

The short answer

There's no exact date to find, in your followers list or in your X archive. By hand, read the join date on the follower's profile and on the accounts listed just under them. If the list is in order, the most recent of those dates is the earliest the follow can have happened. UnfollowMonkey estimates the date for your followers and writes it "~12 March 2024" when we can narrow it to a few days, "~2019-2021" when we can't.

Can you see the exact date someone followed you on X?

No. There are three places you'd expect to find it.

  • Your followers list. It shows who follows you, with no date beside anyone, and X's help page on following doesn't mention one.
  • The Notifications tab. New followers are listed there, but X's help pages don't say how far back the tab goes, or whether an old entry still carries a date.
  • Your mailbox. A search for the follower's name finds a date only if X emailed you about that follow and you kept the email. X's page on email preferences says that since June 2017 it sends one digest of unread notifications, and that you may not be notified of every follow.

Apps aren't handed a follow date either: X's reference for the followers list has one date per follower, the date their account was created.

Does the X archive show when someone followed you?

No. Your archive does contain a list of your followers and a list of the accounts you follow, and X says it can take a few days to prepare. People who've opened theirs describe an account ID and a link to the profile for each follower, and nothing else.

As of October 2026, several of the answers that come up first for this question say the follow dates are in there. You could wait days for a file with no follow dates in it.

The archive does let you compare two follower lists by hand to see who left in between.

Are your X followers listed in chronological order?

The list starts with your newest followers, but X doesn't promise that order. Its old developer reference, as quoted on its developer forum in 2020, described follower lists as most recent first and said the order could change without notice.

When we read a follower list, it reaches us newest first, one page of followers at a time, and each page carries a time marker. Our estimates start from there.

A reply in the same forum thread adds that the list can get out of order when someone follows, unfollows, then follows again.

How to estimate a follow date by hand

You're after two dates: the earliest the follow can have happened, and the latest.

  1. 1

Find them in your followers list

On X, open your profile, then your followers, and scroll down to the account.

  2. 2

Read when their account joined X

It's the "Joined" date on their profile. That isn't when they followed you, but they can't have followed you before it, so it's your earliest date for now.

  3. 3

Open the accounts just below them

If the list order holds, those accounts followed you first. Read their join dates. When one of them joined X after your earliest date, move your earliest date up to it.

  4. 4

Look above them for a follow you can date

Anyone higher up followed you later. If you have a screenshot, or a post where one of them said they'd just followed you, that gives you the latest date.

Say the account you're curious about joined X in 2015, which leaves more than ten years open. Two rows below it sits an account that joined in June 2024, and a few rows above it you spot a friend who followed you during a thread in January 2025. Your follower arrived between June 2024 and January 2025.

This doesn't get you far when the accounts around your follower are all old, because the range stays years wide.

How UnfollowMonkey estimates a follow date, and how close it gets

We never know the day someone followed you. For each follower we keep an earliest and a latest possible date and show our best guess between the two. That's why the column on the Followers page is titled "Estimated follow date" (on a phone, the date shows without the title).

For someone who follows you after your first scan, the two dates are the last check where they weren't in your list and the first check where they were. For the followers you already had, we start from their place in the list, the time markers and their account's creation date, then go back to the ranges that are still too wide and try to narrow them. How narrow the range gets depends on whether you're on Free or on one of the paid plans, Kong or Ultra.

Follows you after your first scanAlready following you
Freeabout a monthabout a year
Kongabout a dayabout a month
Ultra6 hours or lessabout a week

A missed or paused check widens a new follower's range. For the followers you already had, the figure is what we aim for, and a range we fail to narrow stays as it was. On Kong it can come out tighter than a month, because a first scan made on any paid plan aims for about a week.

The width of the range decides how the date is written. Up to 4 days, you get a day, "~12 March 2024". Up to 12 days, a part of the month, "~early March 2024". Wider than that, a month, a part of a year, a year or a span of years: "~March 2024", "early 2024", "~2024", "~2019-2021". Hover over the info icon next to a date, or tap it, to see both ends of the range and our best guess.

The same estimate goes into the alert we DM you when someone unfollows: "They followed you for about 3 years." When the estimate is too loose for that and the account already followed you at your first scan, the line reads "They followed you before your first scan."

UnfollowMonkey

@your_ex unfollowed you 🙈 💔

They followed you for about 3 years.

An example of the alert in your X messages. The second line comes from the estimated follow date.

We have no date for an account that stopped following you before your first scan, because it was never in a list we saved. If what you're after is how your follower count moved over time, that's the follower history chart.

The date you started following someone on X

Same answer in the other direction. X lists the accounts you follow with no date beside them. People who've opened their archive find the same two things in its list of accounts you follow, an account ID and a link to the profile.

On our dashboard, the Following page gives each account you follow an estimated follow date of its own. Set the "Follows you" filter to "No" and you see about when you followed the accounts that don't follow you back.

Frequently asked questions

How long has someone been following me on Twitter?

X shows no duration either, so you count from the follow date, and the answer is as loose as that date. Say a follower arrived between June 2024 and January 2025. In October 2026 they've been following you for about two years.

Can I see who followed me first on Twitter?

Scroll to the bottom of your followers list. If the order holds all the way down, your earliest followers are there. On our Followers page, on a screen wider than a phone's, every column sorts, "Estimated follow date" included.

Someone unfollowed me and followed me again. Which date counts?

The new one. The first follow ended when they unfollowed, and we date the account from its return, like any new follower. Among the accounts we track, the same account followed again after about one unfollow in ten between May and October 2026.

Can I find out when someone followed someone else, or who followed who first?

No. X shows no date on their lists either, and documents no order for them. We only track the account you sign in with, and there's no field to enter another username.

Why do some follow dates say "Before" and a date?

We only have a latest possible date: the account was already in your list the first time we saw it. When we know nothing yet, you get "Not enough banana math yet 🧮🍌".
