Unfollow notifications
Does X (Twitter) notify when you unfollow, or someone unfollows you?
No. X (Twitter) sends no notification when you unfollow someone, and none when someone unfollows you. There's no setting that turns one on.

The short answer
X's FAQ on following says it in one sentence: "X does not send a notification when you unfollow someone." The other person can still find out. Once you unfollow, your profile stops showing them the "Follows you" label, and if they use an unfollow tracker like ours, it names you at its next check. If you mute them instead, X says they won't know.
Can the person you unfollowed still find out?
Yes, if they look. X shows a "Follows you" label on your profile for as long as you follow the person looking at it. After the unfollow it's gone when they open your profile, and you're no longer in their followers list.
The other way is an unfollow tracker, and that's what we make. If the person has connected their account to UnfollowMonkey, they get a DM from @unfollowmonkey that names you, and you're on their dashboard too.
@your_ex unfollowed you 🙈 💔
They followed you for about 3 years.
@moon_signals_88 got suspended 😱
That DM doesn't go out the moment you press the button. We compare their follower list with the one we saved at the previous check, so they find out at their next check. That's once a month on our Free plan and every day on the paid Kong plan. On the Ultra plan we read their follower count about every 5 minutes and run a check as soon as it drops, so they usually know within minutes. If the count doesn't drop, we still compare the list every 6 hours.
Say you unfollow someone on 3 March. If they're on Free and their checks fall on the 1st of the month, our DM goes out on 1 April, 29 days after you unfollowed.
What happens when you unfollow someone on X
Their posts leave your home timeline. You can still open their profile and read it, unless their posts are protected.
If they follow you, they still do. Following on X is one-way, so your unfollow doesn't undo theirs.
Your DM conversation stays open too. As of October 2026, X's help page on Direct Messages says someone you already have a conversation with can keep messaging you unless you block or report them.
Is there a setting to get notified when someone unfollows you?
No. X tells you about new followers three ways: in your notifications, by email unless you've switched that off, and as a push notification if you've turned on "New followers". Its list of push notification types has no entry for an unfollow.
So when a follower goes, X gives you a smaller follower count and no name. Guides published in 2026 say X's analytics page charts how many accounts followed and unfollowed you each day, still without names, and that it needs a paid X Premium subscription. We describe it in how to see your follower count over time.
In our data the missing follower is more often a suspended or deleted account than someone who unfollowed. Of the more than 9,000 follower losses we recorded between May and October 2026, 47% were unfollows. The other 53% were accounts that had been suspended (23%) or deleted or deactivated (30%). Why follower counts drop goes through each cause.
If it's one person you're wondering about, you don't need a tracker: open their profile and look for "Follows you".
To check everyone at once, we save your follower list and compare it with a later one. When a check finds accounts gone, we DM you who they are and what happened to each: "unfollowed you", "got suspended" or "deleted their account". One DM lists up to six accounts, and the dashboard has the rest. When nobody's gone, there's no DM to say so. We can only tell you about unfollows from after you connect. The other methods are in how to see who unfollowed you.
Mute, remove follower, soft block or block: what the other person sees
Unfollowing is one of five things you can do about an account you've had enough of. Here's what each one tells the other person, as of October 2026.
| Does X notify them? | Can they see it on X? | Our DM, if they use us | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mute | No | No | None |
| Unfollow | No | Yes, if they open your profile | "unfollowed you" |
| Remove follower | X doesn't say | Yes: they no longer follow you | None |
| Soft block | No | Yes: they no longer follow you | "unfollowed you", if you followed them |
| Block | No | Yes: your profile says so | "unfollowed you", if you followed them |
X's page on mute says nobody gets unfollowed and a muted account can still DM you. No tracker can report a mute, ours included, because X's developer documentation says an app can't subscribe to notifications about someone being muted.
"Remove this follower" is behind the more icon next to an account in your followers list. X's FAQ on following says it's on the web only, and that the person can follow you again if your posts are public. It doesn't say whether they're notified. Press headlines at the launch, in October 2021, described it as removing followers without them knowing.
Blocking sends no notification either, but X's page on blocking says the blocked account sees that it's blocked when it visits your profile. It also makes each of you unfollow the other. Soft block is the name people give to blocking someone and unblocking them straight away, which leaves them no longer following you.
To us, a block looks like an unfollow. If you followed them, you drop out of their follower list and they get "unfollowed you". We send nothing when you remove them as a follower, because their own follower list hasn't changed. How to know if someone blocked you covers what X itself shows.
Did Twitter ever send unfollow notifications?
Once, by accident. For at least ten days in June 2019, some people got a push notification when an account unfollowed them, worded as if that account had just followed them. Twitter said it was a bug, and the fix was confirmed before the end of that month.
Frequently asked questions
I followed someone by accident and unfollowed right away. Did they get a notification?
Not for the unfollow. For the follow they may have, since X notifies people of a new follower, and a push notification or an email that has gone out can't be taken back. And if they're one of our users, we don't report a follow that lasted only a few minutes.
If I unfollow someone on Twitter and follow them again later, will they notice?
On a protected account, yes: you have to send a new follow request, which they see and can approve or deny. On a public one, X's help pages don't say whether a second follow is announced like the first. In our data, about one in ten unfollows recorded between May and October 2026 was followed by the same account following again, which our DM reports as "followed you again".
X told me I had a new follower, but they aren't in my followers list. Why?
X's help page on following issues gives three likely explanations: the account unfollowed you after the notification went out, it was deactivated, or X hid it for spam.
Can I get your alerts by email or as a push notification?
Not by email, and we have no mobile app. The alerts are DMs on X from @unfollowmonkey, so your phone tells you about one the way it does for any other DM. You can pause them under "Unfollower alerts" in the settings, and the dashboard keeps its history.
