Blocks on X

How to know if someone blocked you on X (Twitter)

X (Twitter) doesn't notify you when someone blocks you, and it gives you no list of who did. You can only check one account at a time: open their profile while you're logged in, and X shows a notice there if they blocked you.

The short answer

You can be blocked and still see their posts. A block on X hasn't hidden public posts since November 2024. You'll know from the notice on their profile, and because you can't follow them, reply, like, repost or send a DM. Blocking also ends the follow in both directions, so if they followed you, your follower count drops by one.

If someone blocked you on X, can you still see their posts?

Yes, when their account is public. X changed the rule over the weekend of 2 and 3 November 2024, and a block no longer hides their public posts from you. X's help page on blocking lists what a block still stops. Once you're blocked, you can't:

  • follow them
  • like, reply to or repost their posts
  • send them a DM
  • add them to a list or tag them in a photo

That breaks the old test, the one that says you're blocked if you can't see their tweets. Plenty of guides still describe a block that way, and as of October 2026 so do two of X's own help pages.

If their account is protected, you see no posts at all. Only followers can read a protected account, and X won't let you follow an account that blocked you.

Two other tests you'll see recommended are searching for the account and mentioning it. X's help pages back neither, and the notice older guides quote has since been reworded.

Can you see a list of who blocked you on X (Twitter)?

No. X keeps a list of the accounts you blocked, under Settings and privacy, then Privacy and safety, then "Blocked accounts". It has no page for the other direction.

No app can build one either. X tells an app which accounts you've blocked, and nothing about who blocked you. Checking profiles from outside fails too, because only the blocked account sees the notice. To everyone else the profile looks normal.

Some sites that promise a block list show a fake X login screen and keep what you type into it. Before you give any tool your X password, read what a tracker should never ask you for.

Blocked, unfollowed, soft-blocked or muted: how to tell which

If what you noticed is a missing follower, or that you no longer follow someone you never unfollowed, this table shows what each action changes on your side. It assumes you followed each other and that their account is still there.

Your followersYour followingTheir profileCan you follow them?
They unfollowed you1 fewerSameNormalYou still do
They blocked you1 fewer1 fewerSays you're blockedNo
Soft block1 fewer1 fewerNormalYes, again
They removed you as a followerSame1 fewerNormalYes, again
They muted youSameSameNormalYou still do

Say that on Sunday you had 863 followers and followed 427 accounts. By Wednesday it's 862 and 426, and you haven't unfollowed anyone. If the same account is missing from both lists, it wasn't a plain unfollow. On their profile, a notice means a block, and a normal profile that lets you follow again means a soft block. If the profile itself is gone, that's the next section.

Soft block means a block followed straight away by an unblock. The unblock puts neither follow back, so the person has dropped you as a follower without leaving you blocked. "Remove this follower" does half of that. It ends your follow and leaves theirs alone. As of October 2026, X's Following FAQs describe it as a web-only option.

Did they block you, or is their account deactivated or suspended?

When you're blocked, their profile is still there, with the notice on it. If the account was deleted or deactivated, you get a message that it doesn't exist, and if X suspended it, a message that it's suspended. Everyone sees those two messages, blocked or not.

Among the accounts UnfollowMonkey tracks, a lost follower is more often an account that's gone than an unfollow or a block. Of the more than 9,000 follower losses we recorded between May and October 2026, 53% were suspended, deleted or deactivated accounts.

Deactivating doesn't delete an account at once. X keeps it for 30 days and deletes it only if the owner hasn't logged back in by then, so a profile that's missing today may be back within the month. About a third of the followers we recorded as deleted came back later.

X also removes locked accounts from follower counts, which is one of the reasons your follower count can drop with nobody unfollowing or blocking you.

Can an unfollow tracker tell a block from an unfollow?

Ours can't, and neither can any tracker that reads your follower list from outside your account. When a follower blocks you, they drop out of that list exactly as if they'd unfollowed, and the list is what we compare from one check to the next. We look the missing account up, find it still active, and DM you "@name unfollowed you 🙈 💔", with a second line such as "They followed you for about 3 months."

We tell you which follower is gone and whether their account still exists, and their profile tells you the rest.

  • Unfollowed
  • Suspended
  • Deleted
  • Came back
What we can tell you about a lost follower: they unfollowed, got suspended, deleted their account, or came back.

Two things never reach us: a block from someone who didn't follow you, because they were never on the list, and anything that happened before your first scan.

How soon you hear depends on your plan: once a month on Free, every day or faster on the paid plans. How to see who unfollowed you goes through the whole method.

Frequently asked questions

Does Twitter notify you when someone blocks you?

No, and the people you block aren't told. X sends no notification for an unfollow either.

Why can I still see the tweets of someone who blocked me?

Because X changed what a block does. Its Engineering account explained on 16 October 2024 that people were using blocks to share and hide harmful or private information about the person they'd blocked.

Can I see how many accounts have blocked me?

X shows no count, and the best-known block counter shut down on 10 November 2024. Even that one only counted blocks among people who had signed in to it, and never showed names.

Does blocking someone on Twitter remove them as a follower?

Yes. Blocking makes them unfollow you and makes you unfollow them. If you only want them off your follower list, "Remove this follower" on x.com does it without a block.

What is a soft block on Twitter?

Blocking someone and unblocking them straight away, so they stop following you without staying blocked. People used it to drop a follower before Twitter added "Remove this follower" in October 2021.

Is there anything I can do about being blocked?

You can block them back, and you can still report the account.

Can I tell if someone muted me?

No. Muting takes your posts out of their timeline. If they followed you they still do, your DMs still reach them, and X doesn't tell you.
