Block and mute
Does X (Twitter) notify someone when you block, mute or remove them?
No. X (Twitter) sends no notification when you block, mute or remove someone. A mute stays invisible, but a block shows on your profile when they visit it, and a removed follower can see they no longer follow you.

The short answer
Blocking sends no notification, but a blocked account that opens your profile sees that it's blocked, and it can no longer follow you, reply or DM you. Muting is the silent one: X says muted accounts won't know. Removing a follower ends their follow without a block, and X's confirmation says they won't be notified. X's help pages describe no notification for a report or a screenshot either, but reading a DM is announced: read receipts are on by default.
Does X notify someone when you block them?
No. X's page on blocking says blocked accounts don't receive a notification. They can find out, though: when a blocked account visits your profile, X shows it that it's blocked.
A block also changes things they may notice before that. As of October 2026, once you block someone:
- they stop following you, and you stop following them
- they can still see your posts if your account is public, but can't like, reply to or repost them
- they can't follow you again, send you a DM or add you to a list
Unfollow trackers see a block as an unfollow. If you followed them, you drop out of their followers list, and if they use UnfollowMonkey, our DM at their next check says "@yourname unfollowed you". How to know if someone blocked you tells the same story from their side.
Does X notify someone when you mute them?
No, and they can't find out from X. X's page on muting says: "Muted accounts will not know that you've muted them and you can unmute them at any time."
Muting only changes what you see. Their posts leave your timeline, but they still follow you if they did, and X says muting doesn't affect their ability to send you a DM. No app can tell them either: X's developer documentation says an app can't subscribe to notifications about someone being muted.
Muting words works the same way, for you alone. X's advanced muting page says a muted word or hashtag is hidden from your notifications and your Home timeline, not from search, and the people who write it aren't told. Muting a conversation stops your notifications about it, and nothing more.
Does X notify someone when you remove them as a follower?
No. When you choose "Remove this follower" on x.com, X's confirmation says the account "won't be notified by X". Its Following FAQs, which describe the option, don't mention it either way.
What they can see is the result. They're no longer in your followers list, and if your posts are protected, they can no longer read them. X says a removal doesn't stop them following you again, or asking to if your posts are protected. How to remove a follower without blocking them has the steps.
Our DMs say nothing to them about it, because their own followers list hasn't changed. On your side, the account is gone from your followers list, so if you use UnfollowMonkey, our next check reports them as having "unfollowed you": a followers list can't tell a removal from an unfollow.
Does X notify someone when you screenshot, report or read their DM?
Here's what X says the other person is told, as of October 2026.
| What you do | Does X tell them? |
|---|---|
| Screenshot a post or a profile | No X help page describes a notification |
| Screenshot a chat | Possibly: X launched its encrypted Chat with screenshot notifications. Its help pages don't describe them |
| Report their post or account | X's help doesn't say it tells them. It says you may or may not hear back about the outcome |
| Hide their reply | No: X says the reply's author isn't notified. The reply stays readable behind the hidden replies icon |
| Add them to a list | X's help doesn't say. Twitter tried to stop telling people in 2017 and went back on it two hours later |
| Read their DM | Yes, while read receipts are on, which they are by default. A message request shows as read only once you accept it |
| Delete a DM you sent | No, and it doesn't leave their side: X says the others in the conversation can still see it |
| Change your @username | No: X says your followers simply see the new name |
| Open their profile | No: nobody can see who viewed their profile |
Chats are the exception. When X launched its encrypted Chat in November 2025, its @chat account listed "block screenshots and get notified of attempts" among the features. X's help pages don't say how that works, so check the conversation's settings in your app. For posts and profiles, X has nothing like Snapchat, which shows an icon in the chat when someone screenshots a Snap, or Instagram, which notifies the sender when it detects a screenshot of a disappearing message.
How blocking and muting have changed on Twitter
| When | What changed |
|---|---|
| 12 December 2013 | Twitter lets blocked accounts keep following, seeing and retweeting the blocker, so they can't tell they're blocked. It reverts the change that evening, writing that "users will once again be able to tell that they've been blocked" |
| 12 May 2014 | Twitter starts rolling out mute: "The muted user will not know that you've muted them" |
| 13 February 2017 | Twitter stops notifying people added to a list, then rolls it back about two hours later, calling it "a misstep" |
| September and October 2021 | "Remove this follower" is tested, then rolled out to everyone on the web |
| 18 August 2023 | Elon Musk posts that block "is going to be deleted as a 'feature', except for DMs". It isn't |
| September to November 2024 | Elon Musk announces on 23 September that blocked accounts will be able to see public posts. X starts rolling it out on 2 November: they can see them, not reply to them or follow |
X's Engineering account gave the reason for the 2024 change on 16 October 2024: people were using blocks to share and hide harmful or private information about the person they'd blocked.
Frequently asked questions
If I unblock someone, do they get a notification?
X's page on blocking doesn't describe one. Unblocking doesn't bring back the follows the block removed: each of you has to follow the other again.
Can someone tell that I muted them?
No. X says muted accounts won't know. They still follow you if they did, and they can still DM you.
Does X notify someone when you screenshot their tweet?
Not for a post or a profile: no X help page describes a screenshot notification. Chats may be different, since X announced screenshot notifications for its encrypted Chat in November 2025.
Does X tell someone you reported them?
X's help pages don't say that it does. They say you, the person reporting, may or may not hear back about the outcome.
Is blocking more noticeable than unfollowing?
Yes. Neither sends a notification, but a blocked account sees on your profile that it's blocked, and it can't follow you again. After an unfollow, your profile only stops showing "Follows you": see does X notify when you unfollow.
