Missing followers
X (Twitter) not showing all your followers? Why, and what to check
Your profile says one number and your Followers list looks shorter, or a follower X told you about isn't in it. X (Twitter) names a few reasons itself: a filter that hides suspected spam, and followers who left or were locked. And logged out, x.com won't open a Followers list at all.

The short answer
Turn off the quality filter first: X says it leaves suspected spam accounts out of your followers list, and that turning it off shows the full list. If a follower X told you about still isn't there, X says it's likely they were hidden for spam, unfollowed you or deactivated. Logged out, x.com won't open anyone's Followers or Following list. After you reactivate, X says your counts come back within 24 hours.
Why your list and your count don't match
X's help page on following issues has a section called "My follower count is wrong". If X told you about a new follower you can't find later, it says "it's likely that account was hidden for spam activity, unfollowed you, or deactivated their account." Each case looks a little different:
| What you see | Likely reason | What to do |
|---|---|---|
| The list looks shorter than the number on your profile | X's quality filter leaves suspected spam accounts out of the list | Turn the filter off (next section) |
| A follower X told you about isn't in the list | Hidden for spam, unfollowed you, or deactivated | Turn the filter off, then open their profile |
| Your count dropped, but nobody you know left | X removes locked accounts from every follower count | See why you lost followers, linked below |
| Your counts look wrong after you reactivate | X says counts can take up to 24 hours to come back | Wait, and contact X's support after 48 hours |
| Logged out, the Followers page asks you to sign in | x.com opens Followers and Following lists only when you're signed in | Sign in |
X doesn't say how often it updates your count or your list. Its own app even says, in its analytics text, that its follows-over-time chart "does not necessarily reflect your follower count." For a count that fell overnight, see why you lost followers on X.
Turn off the quality filter to see your full list
X's fix for a short list is one setting. Its following-issues page says: "To see the full list of your followers, including suspected spam accounts, turn off the quality filter in your settings."
- 1
Open your notification settings
In the app, go to your Notifications tab and tap the gear icon. On x.com, go to Notifications and click Settings.
- 2
Turn off Quality filter
Turn off Quality filter. On iPhone it's a switch, on Android and x.com a box to uncheck. Then open your Followers list again.
X's notifications help says the filter is on by default "If you are new to X or re-installed your app". So it may be on even if you never touched it.
That same page describes the filter only as a notifications filter: it "filters lower-quality content from your notifications, for example, duplicate posts or content that appears to be automated". It never mentions your followers list, and neither does the setting's text in X's app. Only the following-issues page says the filter also hides accounts from the list. On 18 August 2016 Twitter said it was rolling the filter out to everyone, for "your notifications and other parts of your Twitter experience".
Why you can't open someone's followers list
Logged out, you can't open anyone's Followers or Following list. We tried on 12 October 2026: x.com sent the Followers and Following pages of @NASA, @BarackObama and @jack to its sign-in screen, and did the same for a username nobody has. The profiles still opened with their counts, such as 92.3M Followers for @NASA. It's the page, not the account: sign in and try again.
Signed in, X documents no limit on how far a Followers or Following list goes, and its app has no message saying a list was cut short. We couldn't test it signed in. Whether a private account hides its lists from people who don't follow it, X doesn't say either: can you hide your followers list on X?
You may read that X shows only 200 followers. That number most likely comes from X's old API, whose followers list returned "a maximum of 200 user objects per page", X's migration guide says. That's per page, not in total. X's current API returns up to 1,000 accounts per page, page after page, and gives no total limit.
Follow requests that don't show up
If your account is private, requests wait in the app under your profile icon, then Follower requests. On Android you may have a menu icon instead of your profile icon. On x.com, they're under More, then Follower requests. X's help on requests gives these reasons for an empty list:
- Your posts are public. "Accounts with public posts will never be asked to approve a follower request."
- You have none. "When there are zero requests, the notification message disappears completely from your profile."
- The person cancelled. If X emailed you about a request you can't find, "it's likely that the person decided to cancel the request after sending it."
- You made your posts public. "If you previously had protected posts, any pending follower requests will not be accepted automatically. Those people will need to follow you again."

Followers missing after you reactivate
Coming back from a deactivation can show the wrong counts for a while. X's reactivation help says: "Some people's following/followers or post counts do not immediately display their previous numbers upon reactivation. Don't worry, these will be fully restored within 24 hours of reactivation." After 48 hours, it says to contact its support.
Don't deactivate to fix a wrong count. X's deactivation page says that for "incorrect follower or following counts", "deactivating and reactivating your account will not resolve it." What happens to followers while an account is away: deactivated or deleted?
When follower counts and lists went wrong on Twitter and X
Here are some times Twitter or X confirmed a problem with follower counts or changed how it counts them, and times it asked logged-out visitors to sign in.
| When | What happened |
|---|---|
| August 2015 | Follower and following counts disappeared for some people. @Support said "Some Twitter users may be experiencing an issue with inaccurate follower counts", and the next day: "The issue with inaccurate follower count is now resolved." |
| July 2018 | Twitter began removing locked accounts from follower counts, and said most people would lose four followers or fewer |
| November 2018 | Twitter removed locked accounts from counts again. It told Reuters a bug had briefly added some back for "very few accounts", which "led to misleading follower counts" |
| 30 June to 5 July 2023 | Twitter required a login to view tweets and profiles. On 1 July Elon Musk announced daily reading limits, and Business Today reported more than 3,000 complaints on Downdetector, "including the inability to retrieve tweets, missing timelines and followers disappearing". By 5 July single tweets opened logged out again |
| October 2026 | Logged out, every account's Followers and Following pages lead to X's sign-in screen, in our tests on 11 and 12 October |
What UnfollowMonkey shows
At each check we read your followers list through a data provider and compare it with the follower count X shows on your profile. If the list comes back short of that count by more than 5 accounts, or 0.5% on a bigger account, we discard the check, send no alerts and try again about an hour later. A check that comes back short by less than that still counts, so a follower it missed can show up as "unfollowed", then as back at a later check.
Your dashboard's Followers list is the list we read, so it can be a little shorter or longer than the number on your profile. For each follower who leaves, we say whether they unfollowed you, got suspended or deleted their account, and we tell you if they come back within 40 days.
Frequently asked questions
Why does my Twitter follower count not match my followers list?
Check the quality filter first: X says it leaves suspected spam accounts out of your list, and that turning it off shows the full list. X also removes locked accounts from follower counts. It doesn't say how often it updates the count or the list.
Why can't I see someone's followers on X?
If you're logged out, x.com sends every Followers and Following page to its sign-in screen, whatever the account. Sign in and try again. X doesn't say whether a private account hides its lists from people who don't follow it.
Does X limit how many followers you can see?
X documents no limit, and its app has no message saying a list was cut short. The "200 followers" you may read about most likely comes from the page size of X's old API, not a limit on the list.
Why can't I find a new follower X notified me about?
X says it's likely that account "was hidden for spam activity, unfollowed you, or deactivated their account." Turn off the quality filter and look again. If they're still missing, open their profile to see whether the account still exists.
Why don't my follow requests show up on X?
X gives three reasons: your posts are public, you have no requests, or the person cancelled. Making your posts public also drops pending requests, and those people have to follow you again.
